Crucial Tips On Developing Presentation Skills That Will Make Your Company Soar

In today’s business environment, making presentations is considered to be one of the most important tools to get your message across to a large group of audience, in the most concise, interactive and effective manner. Thus having good presentation skills are a must if you wish to sound convincing, self-confident and effective in your communication. We have all gone through presentations in our professional lives. Some were so good that we still remember the words or the presenter himself and some were so bad that it was a nightmare to sit through it. So what makes a presentation good or bad? Has it got something to do with presentation skills or the prepared or unprepared speaker? Perhaps both are equally important to make or break a presentation. Be it a business presentation, marketing presentation or simply a stint of public speaking, there are two essential pre-requisites to make a killer presentation. You need self-confidence and a thorough knowledge of the topic to be presented. While both are inter-related to an extent that you can not be self-confident unless you are thoroughly competent about the subject you are going to talk about, self-confidence can also be gained through practice, training and repeated exposure to similar situations.

When you think of presentations, you naturally think of Powerpoint presentations. While Powerpoint has become an inevitable tool to communicate to a group, how many of us really keep it as a tool for communication? We often let Powerpoint become the de facto presenter with its multitude options of color, animation and special effects. We need to draw a line with regard to how much color, font inter-play, animation and transition effects we wish to use so that the presentation becomes more professional and not like something out of a sci-fi movie!  Using sober colors, choosing backgrounds where your text matter becomes most legible, minimal use of animations and sound effects and avoiding too many slides will automatically enhance your presentation skills. Remember, Powerpoint is not the presenter but you are.

The other important ingredient for a killer presentation is a thorough knowledge of your topic. Be a master of your subject so that you are able to answer questions, trigger a debate or even motivate and inspire your audience to sit up and take some positive action. If you feel that you lack the courage to face an audience, yet have been pushed to make a presentation, practice in front of a mirror, video tape your presentation and take necessary steps to correct your diction, grammar, pauses and style. Humor, is a social lubricant. It can be used very effectively to break the ice during presentations and put your audience at ease in a very short time. The reason why a thorough knowledge about your audience is necessary during a presentation is because then, you know what problems or issues they are facing and modify your presentation accordingly. Remember, each and every member of your audience is looking for the answer ‘what’s in it for me?’ So, a knowledge of the audience coupled with frequent interactions during your presentation will give you enough signals as to which way your presentation is moving and whether you are being able to demonstrate your presentation skills.
